          In 1969, the ASCE Construction Institute formed a Committee on Underground Research.  In 1970, this committee was replaced by the Underground Construction Research Council, jointly sponsored by ASCE and AIME.  In 1978, the name was changed to the Underground Technology Research Council to identify with mining as well as civil engineering.
